The Four Healthiest Resolutions You Can Make For 2019

‘Tis the season to be jolly, to make merry, to spend time with loved ones and ... to make New Year’s Resolutions! Which resolutions have the most impact on your health and well-being? We’re glad you asked!  Here are four resolutions that will give you the highest bang-for-your-resolution buck this year.

1) Stop smoking

The bad news is that smoking is bad for your health. Really, really bad. Tobacco use accounts for one in five deaths in the U.S., which means half a million Americans die each year from smoking and secondhand smoke.

The good news is that quitting tobacco has incredible health benefits! Resolving to quit smoking (and yes, vaping counts as smoking) means you’ll live longer, avoid COPD and other chronic lung diseases, lower your rate of many cancers, and literally breathe easier.

2) Get at least seven hours of sleep a night

How is sleep beneficial to your health and wellbeing?  Let us count the ways.

Sleep is essential for your emotional health, your concentration and your memory.  Sleep helps you maintain a healthy weight, and it improves your cardiovascular health.

Sleep also helps rejuvenate your immune system! In fact, when researchers exposed people to a virus, those who got less than seven hours of sleep a night were four times as likely to contract the virus as people who at least seven hours of sleep.

3) Meditate for 10 minutes a day

Meditation is another healthy habit that has myriad benefits. It’s been proven to alleviate anxiety and stress. It lowers blood pressure and improves memory. It helps people who are prone to addiction avoid giving into their unhealthy cravings, whether it’s for junk food or alcohol or tobacco or recreational drugs.

Meditation also improves sleep quality and mood. And it helps alleviate chronic pain. With all these benefits, which you can get from even 10 minutes of meditation a day, the question is, Why wouldn’t you make meditation a priority resolution in 2019!?

4) Eat a plant-based diet

It’s okay if you don’t want to commit to being 100% vegan or vegetarian. Choosing to eat a plant-based diet, meaning you get most of your calories from fruits and vegetables and treat dairy and processed grains and meat more like side dishes than main courses, can have lots of health benefits!

Eating a plant-based diet can help you lose weight if you’re overweight, or maintain a healthy weight if you’re already in the recommended weight range. Fruits and vegetables are often low in calories and high in water content and fiber, which means you can eat large portions and enjoy feeling full without consuming too many calories.

A plant-based diet also ensures you have plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can prevent many cancers and chronic diseases, helping you live a longer, healthier life.

Lastly, since produce costs less than meat, resolving to eat a plant-based diet can have positive effects on your budget, too!
