The History of Cedar Hills

Now a contemporary staple of the Beaverton historic community, and home to our newest Legacy-GoHealth Urgent Care center, the Cedar Hills neighborhood is rooted in humble beginnings.

At the turn of the 20th century, the project to convert the outer edges of Portland from a wooded forestland to a thriving community was dubbed by The Oregonian’s Mervin Shoemaker, “the most ambitious suburban housing development ever attempted in the Northwest.”

The area was already under development by April of 1946 when developers announced the project to the public. 50 homes were already under construction and plans to expand were well in the works. Building up the bones within to put a thriving community was a momentous feat. Building out plans to establish a shopping center, schools, parks, and churches were only the tip of this prolific plan’s trajectory.

Cedar Hills took 15 years to complete, and by 1961 it was the largest single housing tract developed in all of the western United States, and its own self-sufficient bustling community.

The influx of commerce and community breathed new life into the Bernard Airport, built in 1928.  The little airport began and continued to expand, and by 1938 the Oregonian boasted that it was “perhaps the busiest non-commercial airport in the United States.”

While the airport ceased operation under the increasing expansive pressure of the community, consumerism prevailed and Charles Bernard was able to lease the land to developers of the Beaverton Mall.

In 2002, the new shopping center was renamed Cedar Hills Crossing, which to date remains the heartbeat of this Beaverton historic community, Cedar Hills.

Legacy-GoHealth Urgent care can now proudly belong to this prolific and quintessentially Portland community, with our location at SW Cedar Hills Blvd. Please stop by and see us! Until then, keep up with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
