How to Keep Your Eyes As Healthy As Possible

Did you know that 80% of the sensory input your brain receives come from your vision? This means that keeping your eyes healthy is vital to your health and wellbeing. Here are some simple steps you can follow to keep your eyes as healthy as possible!

1) Have Regular Eye Exams.

Even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts, it’s important to have regular eye exams, since many eye diseases are asymptomatic in their early stages and can only be detected when a trained professional performs an eye exam.

If you wear corrective lenses, you should have an eye exam at least every 12 months. If you don’t require corrective lenses, eye doctors recommend having an eye exam every five to ten years in your 20’s-30’s, every two to four years from ages 40 to 54, every one to three years from ages 55 to 64, and every one to two years after age 65.

People who have eye symptoms, chronic illnesses like diabetes, or a family history of certain eye diseases may need screening more frequently. Following the recommended guidelines for eye exams is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your eye health.

2) Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables.

You’ve probably heard that you should eat carrots to improve your night vision. While it’s true that carrots contain high levels of beta-carotene, a precursor to the Vitamin A that you need for healthy vision, carrots aren’t the only produce you should be eating for eye health.

For example, sweet potatoes contain high levels of beta-carotene as well as Vitamin E. Leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach and collard greens contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, which help lower your risk of age-related eye diseases.

When it comes to fruit, tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit and apricots all contain lycopene, which has been shown to lower the risk of many eye diseases. So make sure you’re eating a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of produce to keep your eyes as healthy as possible.

3) Wear Sunglasses (Even in the Winter!)

Sunglasses aren’t just a fashionable accessory; they serve a medical purpose, too, protecting your eyes from harmful UV exposure. Even in the winter, it’s important to wear sunglasses, since light reflects off snow, increasing the risk of UV-related eye damage.

Protecting your eyes from UV rays can lower your risk of a host of eye diseases, including cataracts, macular degeneration, photokeratitis (a painful “sunburn” of the cornea) and pterygiums (abnormal tissue growth on the surface of the eye.)

4) Wear Proper Eye Protection.

Eye doctors estimate that a whopping 90% of the 2,000 work-related eye injuries that happen every day in the U.S. could be prevented by wearing appropriate safety goggles or glasses. So when you’re at work (or doing a DIY project at home), remember to wear eye protection if you’re working in an area with chemicals, dust, flying particles, or any other potentially harmful substances.
