Got Neck or Shoulder Pain?

Why Are You Having Neck and Shoulder Pain?

Do you ever wake up in the morning with surprise neck and shoulder pain? No trauma or injury that you are aware of? Where did it come from? Often, if you do not know where your pain is coming from it is hard to figure out where to go for relief. Here’s what you need to know about neck and shoulder pain to help you to find the right care at the right time:

Is Your Pain Musculoskeletal or Something More Serious?

The shoulder and neck regions are full of many different musculoskeletal structures such as, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons to help with your posture and complete normal day to day activities. It is also the epicenter of many nerve plexuses and artery/vein pathways. So, the major question is, how do you know if your pain is musculoskeletal or something more?

The breakdown is simple.

  • If you have pain after a specific event or injury, such as, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, working long hours at a desk, heavy lifting, or a car accident - it is likely something regarding a musculoskeletal structure. Ligament or tendon injuries can sometimes require surgery but that is determined after full evaluation and the degree of injury sustained.
  • If the pain only occurs when you move your neck a certain way and it radiates down your arm through your shoulders, this is likely from a pinched nerve or a disc issue. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath or a fever this is an emergent matter for which you should get medical attention right away.

When Should I Seek Treatment for Neck Pain and What Should I Expect?

Overall, you should not wait to seek treatment. Whether non-urgent or emergent, if you’re in pain get it checked out right way. The treatment may require medications to relieve pain and inflammation. You may also be referred to a specialist for further evaluation or for physical therapy.

The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you are to seeing neck and shoulder pain relief! Following doctor’s orders is important and sometimes patience is necessary. The pain may have started suddenly but the healing process can take time. For the more emergency causes, getting immediate medical attention will help decipher the nature of your symptoms and the necessary treatment. Don’t wait!
