Surprising Health Remedies You Can Find at The Grocery Store

Many patients think they have to visit a pharmacy or doctor’s office to find effective remedies for common medical conditions. But it turns out, there are lots of surprising health remedies waiting for you on grocery store shelves! Here are a few remedies you can add to your cart the next time you go shopping.

1) Chocolate

Chocolate lovers of the world, rejoice! Because chocolate has been shown to have multiple medicinal properties. Dark chocolate contains lots of nutrients, including fiber, iron, manganese and magnesium. It helps lower blood pressure, and it has also been shown to lower cholesterol.

Another surprising health benefit of chocolate is that it is a more effective cough suppressant than prescription cough medications, including codeine!

2) Honey

Speaking of coughs, honey is another grocery store item that’s been shown to be an effective cough suppressant. In fact, in children it’s been shown to be a more effective cough treatment than any over-the-counter cough suppressant available! When children in the study were given a dose of honey at bedtime, they had a 50% lower incidence of cough. And not only did the children sleep better, their parents did, too!

(Just remember not to give honey to children less than 12 months old.)

3) Tea

Why do we love tea? Let us count the ways. First, tea is great for your brain, offering improved concentration, relief from anxiety, and protection against several forms of dementia.

Second, tea contains a catechin called EGCG, a natural compound that regulates blood sugar, improves fat metabolism, and acts as a mild appetite suppressant. All these effects work together to help you maintain an efficient metabolism and a healthy weight.

And tea also lowers rates of heart disease and cancer, which means people who drink tea tend to live longer than their non-tea-drinking counterparts. In research studies, people who drank at least two cups of tea a day received the highest benefit.

4) Chicken Noodle Soup

Did your mom make you chicken noodle soup when you were sick as a child? As it turns out, she was onto something! Chicken noodle soup is actually an effective remedy for the common cold. People who eat chicken noodle soup when they’re sick tend to have less severe symptoms and a shorter course of infection.

For patients who suffer from a lack of appetite when they’re sick, chicken noodle soup offers a balanced bowl of nutrition since it contains carbohydrates, protein and vegetables. The steam from the broth helps alleviate congestion. And chicken contains high levels of an amino acid called cysteine, which helps break down excess mucus faster.

5) Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is another easy health remedy to pick up at the grocery store, especially if you suffer from kidney stones. Studies have shown drinking half a cup (4 oz.) of lemon juice a day can decrease your risk of developing kidney stones, because the citric acid in lemon juice dissolves the crystals that cause kidney stones.

As an added benefit, lemon juice is high in Vitamin C, so it gives your immune system a boost (which is especially helpful during cold and flu season!)
