Half of Americans make New Year’s resolutions every year. However, 80% will have abandoned their resolution by February. Here are three secrets that can help you stick to your resolutions, becoming the best version of you that you can be in 2019!

1. Set Measurable Goals.

Often people don’t succeed at their resolution because it’s too vague to measure or quantify. Research shows that the more specific and measurable your goal is, the more likely you’ll be to reach it. So instead of saying, "I want to eat healthier," resolve to "cut out all processed grains." Instead of saying, "I want to exercise more," resolve to "walk for 30 minutes four times a week." Instead of saying, "I want to meditate more," resolve to "meditate for 10 minutes every morning." Instead of saying, "I want to lose weight," resolve to "lose five pounds a month for the next three months." By articulating specific, measurable goals, you’ll increase your odds of meeting them!

2. Don’t Give Up.

There’s a Japanese proverb that says, "Fall down seven times, stand up eight." This is excellent wisdom when it comes to keeping your New Year’s resolution. Because odds are, you’ll slip up and have that cigarette, or you’ll watch Netflix instead of going for a run, or you’ll make an impulse purchase at the mall. It’s important to remember that if you do fail to keep your resolution, you don’t have to give up completely! Learn from your mistake, remind yourself why this resolution matters to you, and keep trying until you reach your goal.

3. Celebrate Milestones.

Changing habits is hard work, which is why it’s important to reward yourself for the small steps you take on your way to meeting your ultimate 2019 goals. Whether you’ve gone 24 hours without smoking, a week without drinking alcohol, lost 5 pounds or exercised every day for a month, finding healthy ways to celebrate your small successes along the way makes it more likely you’ll make it to the big victory at the end!
