GREENWICH VILLAGE — A new urgent care center in the heart of Greenwich Village offers high-tech services to make things easier for patients with mobility issues, including working with Uber to facilitate travel to and from the center.

Northwell Health has opened 22 GoHealth centers since 2014 across the metropolitan area and plans to open 15 more by the end of this year.

"We’re able to treat patients very quickly, get them on their way back to good health, back to what they’re doing in their day, and we can deal with things of a more acute nature — not life threatening, but certainly a higher level of acute care and treatment than you would normally see in a primary office care office for a very reasonable price," GoHealth Urgent Care CEO Todd Latz said.

This month brought two new facilities: one in the Village at 41 E. 8th St. between University Place and Broadway just a block and a half from New York University and Washington Square Park, and another on the Upper West Side at 2628 Broadway.

The staff at GoHealth can run x-rays and lab tests in-house, and uses an integrated electronic records system linked to Northwell Health's larger network. (The provider also operates the freestanding emergency room on Seventh Avenue South that replaced St. Vincent's Hospital.)

They accept walk-ins and patients with appointments can check in online.

"We let [patients] control their environment — from the online queuing and checking system to how much time they’d like to spend with providers. We don’t rush them out of that experience," Latz said.

The urgent care center offers a lower-cost alternative to Northwell Health's emergency room, where locals have complained of high fees for procedures as small as checking out a bee sting.

"We see a real need for our service and we’re excited to be able to offer that to patients," Latz said. "We believe that we fit very well into the healthcare continuum between primary care and emergency room care and at a much, much lower price point than what you would normally see at an emergency department."

We asked a doctor to debunk these three mental illness myths, If we could project three words into the sky (Batman-style), we know exactly which ones we’d pick: Mental. Health. Matters. Though May is Mental Health Month, we feel that such an important topic should be on our radars 24/7. We should constantly be working to take care of our minds and to, most importantly, defeat harmful myths that encourage us to do otherwise.

The Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care chain is hoping to set up shop in Mineola as part of its recent expansion.

Pending a decision from the Nassau County Planning Commission, Mineola’s Village Board last Wednesday tabled the company’s application to open urgent care facility at 12 E. Jericho Turnpike.

If approved, the Mineola facility would be one of 50 to 100 the company aims to open by the end of 2017 in a partnership with Manhasset-based health-care chain Northwell Health, GoHealth New York President Sarah Arora said Wednesday.

“All physicians are highly skilled and caring providers,” Arora told village trustees. “As long as it’s not a life threatening situation, people can walk in, be treated and receive great care.”

There are 21 GoHealth Urgent Care Centers open, including locations in Roslyn, Rockville Centre, Massapequa and Bellmore. The Roslyn location at 1033 Northern Blvd. opened in November.

The Mineola location would be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

GoHealth Urgent Care gives access to the continuum of health care by developing and operating small-box urgent care facilities that company officials said are seamlessly integrated into market-leading health systems.

The company’s partnership with Northwell Health allows patients to be transferred to the health system’s hospitals across Long Island if they need additional care, according to a 2014 Northwell press release.

Mineola trustees said they were concerned about the lack of a traffic light for cars exiting the property’s parking lot to go east on Jericho Turnpike.

“This is a very dangerous exit as there is constant traffic on Jericho Turnpike at most hours of the day,” Trustee Dennis Walsh said. “There needs to be a traffic light there.”

Mayor Scott Strauss also said it is essential to have lighting in the parking lot and maintain the property.

Bohler Engineering Assistant Project Manager Kristin DeLuca, an engineer on the GoHealth project, said there is efficient lighting on the premises.

Village of Flower Hill trustees expressed similar traffic concerns about the Northern Boulevard location, prohibiting left turns out of the facility onto the thoroughfare in their 2015 approval.

The Village Board spoke about a proposed local law amending Section 550-16 of the Municipal Code of the Incorporated Village of Mineola. Trustees also tabled additional regulations for vape shops and hookah bars on Wednesday after a public hearing.

“We are not against hookah bars, but are looking to define a place to land them so that they are not on residential streets,” trustees said.

A SMARTER WAY TO HANDLE NON-EMERGENCY VISITS

May 18, 2016

I’ve spent some time in Emergency Room waiting areas with my kids during some after-hours health scares and sicknesses, and it wasn’t exactly fun. If you’re actually an emergency case, ERs can be wonderful (I can still feel the morphine they gave me during a gallstone attack a few months ago). But if you have a run-of-the-mill, non-emergency illness or injury, and you can’t go to your own doctor, the ER was not designed with you in mind. It’s not the ER’s fault, routine care just isn’t what it was set up to do.

I’m a huge fan of my doctor, and my kids’ pediatrician. But their hours are pretty close to business hours, and sometimes we get sick or hurt in the evening or on the weekend. And even when we are available to see them on their schedule, it’s really hard to get a same-day or next-day appointment with our doctors. The ER used to be where I would grudgingly go when our usual doctors weren’t available.

But not anymore. This is where urgent care, walk-in centers come in.

Urgent-care centers are the best thing to happen to health care since fashion designers started designing hospital gowns. In just the last three months, I’ve been to one twice, my husband has been once, and my daughter has been once. These were all visits where we otherwise would have had to wait days for an appointment with our normal doctors, or gone to the ER for something that wasn’t ER-worthy.

Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care centers are staffed by experienced clinicians: physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Each state-of-the-art Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care center can handle labs and x-rays. And if you need some sort of follow-up care, GoHealth will help connect you with world-class Northwell Health providers and services.

Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care staff members are also trained to treat children and babies (who are at least six-months old). There is nothing fun about caring for a sick child, but being able to go to a bright, clean, convenient centers makes things a little easier. And as a mom I know that when you’re frazzled, every bit helps.

GoHealth Urgent Care currently has locations in the NYC/Long Island and Portland OR areas, with plans to expand to other markets.

Over the next couple of months I’ll be going into more detail about the different aspects of urgent care centers and how they can benefit you and your family, so please make sure to check back soon when I write about when it’s appropriate to go to an urgent care center vs. an emergency room. But if you can’t wait, you can get a sneak peek with this helpful graphic about when to go to the ER and when to go to an urgent care center.

In the meantime, you can connect with Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care on Facebook and Twitter.

Crime incident reports in the Castro have notably lighter in frequency over the last couple of weeks since our previous roundup. So this time around, we're shifting focus to the safety front, with updates on Upper Market street safety, new plans for an urgent care center, and information on an upcoming self-defense workshop in early June. But first, the crime reports. (All reports below come via the SFPD, unless otherwise noted.)

Jeffrey's Natural Pet Foods Repeat Burglary

We reported last week that the Castro location of Jeffrey's Natural Pet Foods, was burglarized on May 8th, for the second time in five months. The store's manager guessed that a crowbar was used to pry open the store’s back window, and that the same instrument was used to get into the store’s register and safe. No products or electronics were stolen, only cash.

While police investigate, Jeffrey's is making some changes, adding stronger security at the back door and windows, as well as extra lighting, security cameras, and an alarm system.

Argument Leads To Violent Robbery

On May 14th at 2:30am, a 22-year-old man got into an argument with two men in their 20s as he was getting into a ride share vehicle at Castro and Market. One of the suspects slammed his head into the car. Both suspects then smashed his phone and stole money from him. The ride share driver took the victim to the hospital where he was treated for a mild concussion. No arrests were made.

Dolores Phone Robbery

Later on the 14th, at 10pm, a 41-year-old man was walking while on his phone near 16th and Dolores. Another man, 35-40, punched him and grabbed his phone, running in an unknown direction. No arrest was made.

Upper Market Intersection Safety Updates

Hoodline covered a May 5th open house put on by the here.

New Urgent Care Center Heading To Former RadioShack

After a little over a year of vacancy, we learned that an urgent care center plans to move into the former RadioShack space at 2288 Market St. GoHealth Urgent Care will be opening its first Bay Area location, offering local treatment for upper respiratory conditions, cuts, fractures, sprains, and other minor injuries. If all goes according to plan, GoHealth will open in August of this year.

Castro Community On Patrol Offering Free Self-Defense Workshop

Castro Community On Patrol, the neighborhood's yolunteer-driven safety and awareness group, offers self-defense classes in addition to their routine patrols of the Castro. Their upcoming class, taught by Grand Master Ken Craig, will take place on Monday, June 13 at 7:00pm at STRUT (470 Castro St.). The class is already at capacity, but interested readers can register to be on the waitlist via Eventbrite.
